It hasnt always been called the crown it originally went by the name of the railway tavern.
Refurbished in 1885 and at least twice since it is an outstanding example of a victorian gin palace and one of northern irelands best known pubs. Owned by the national trust the crown bar is one of belfasts most famous and beautiful bars. The crown bar was recorded in the 1852 belfast street directory as the ulster railway hotel and tavern the proprietor being terence ohanlon.
Dating back to 1826 the crown liquor saloon in belfast was opened by felix ohanlon as the railway tavern and was then later bought by a bloke named michael flanagan who renamed and renovated the pub in 1885. In 1859 it was recorded that the ulster railway hotel was let to mr ohanlon by henry joy. The crown liquor saloon also known as the crown bar is a pub in great victoria street in belfast northern ireland.
The historic victorian gin palace dates back to 1826.
