The destruction of asgard was the result of the fire demon surtur being released by loki in the achievement of the doomsday prophecy known as ragnaroek which had been figured out by thor as the only way to stop the goddess of death hela before she could lay waste across the nine realms and beyond. Thor realizes the only way to defeat hela is to sever the connection to her power meaning asgard the planet must be destroyed. Skip to the end sutur has been reunited with.
