Peru machu picchu history. Due to limited historical information the true and original name of this epic inca citadel is unknown. Machu picchu meaning old hill was an imperial estate founded by and belonging to pachacuti inca yupanqui the inca ruler in the mid 15th century ce. There are many intriguing aspects of the history of machu picchu with one of the most fascinating being the relatively small period of its use.
It is the seat of the machupicchu districtmachupicchu lies at the vilcanota river. Due to its location in the mountainous jungle of cusco machu picchu was a strategic point during the wars waged by manco inca and the other vilcabamba rebels between 1537 and 1572. Machu picchu also spelled machupijchu site of ancient inca ruins located about 50 miles 80 km northwest of cuzco peru in the cordillera de vilcabamba of the andes mountains.
The name machupicchu written in english as machu picchu was given to the citadel by hiram bingham after its scientific discovery in 1911. Built during the reign of inca pachacutec 1438 1471 machu picchu took some 30 years to construct. Machu picchu is a 15th century inca citadel located in the eastern cordillera of southern peru on a 2430 metre 7970 ft mountain ridge.
There are many hotels and restaurants. This intricate and beautiful complex was built at the height of the inca empire but it was in use for less than 100 years around the time of the spanish conquest of peru in the early sixteenth century machu picchu was abandoned. It is the closest access point to the historical site of machu picchu which is 6 kilometres 37 mi away or about a 15 hours walk.
Machupicchu or machupicchu pueblo also known as aguas calientes is a location in peru situated in the cusco region urubamba province. It is perched above the urubamba river valley in a narrow saddle between two sharp peaksmachu picchu old peak and huayna picchu new peakat an elevation of 7710 feet 2350 metres. According to some historians machu picchu was radically depopulated in 1537 because many of its inhabitants were recruited to join the manco inca rebel army.
