Leprosy also called hansens disease is an infection caused by a slow growing bacteria mycobacterium leprae that causes skin lesions and nerve damage in the hands and feet. At one end of the spectrum is lepromatous leprosy ll which represents a diminished host response to the leprosy bacillus. Skin changes in ll leprosy are more extensive than in tt leprosy. Leprosy is an infectious disease that causes severe disfiguring skin sores and nerve damage in the arms legs and skin areas around your body.
The clinical manifestations of this illness depend on the host response to infection. The initial skin lesions are usually of the indeterminate type presenting as a solitary or small number of hypopigmented patches before evolving into borderline tuberculoid or lepromatous types.
